Let’s tell the truth.
A lot of women are not lazy.
They are not unqualified.
They are not “behind.”
They are simply not positioned.
You may have the skill.
You may have the business idea.
You may have the work ethic.
You may even have the faith.
But if you do not understand where the real opportunities are, how to prepare your business, and how to move with structure, you can stay stuck for years, thinking income is only supposed to come from a job.
That is why I created GovCon Glow Up.
This is not about pretending government contracting is easy money.
This is about helping women understand the opportunity, get clear, and start building with strategy.
The government buys from businesses every day. SAM.gov is the official system where businesses can register and search federal contract opportunities, including solicitations, award notices, and other procurement notices. (SAM.gov)
But here is the part most people miss:
You do not need to know everything to begin.
You need to know your next right step.
Inside GovCon Glow Up, I break this down in plain English so you can stop guessing and start positioning yourself.

What Is Government Contracting in Plain English?
Government contracting is when the government pays businesses to provide goods or services.
That can include:
- Cleaning services
- Office support
- Supplies
- Delivery
- Training
- Consulting
- Technology support
- Staffing
- Event help
- Maintenance
This is not only for big companies.
Small businesses can enter this space too. The federal government has programs and goals designed to include small businesses, including women-owned small businesses. SBA states that the government’s goal is to award at least 5% of federal contracting dollars to women-owned small businesses each year. (SBA)
That matters.
Because many women are sitting on skills that could be packaged into real services.
The problem is not always lack of ability.
The problem is lack of structure.
In Module 1 of GovCon Glow Up, I explain the difference between grants, jobs, contracts, prime contracting, and subcontracting so you finally understand what you are stepping into.
Why Beginners Get Overwhelmed
Government contracting can sound confusing because people use too many big words.
You hear:
- RFP
- RFQ
- NAICS
- UEI
- CAGE Code
- Capability Statement
- Set-aside
- Prime contractor
- Subcontractor
And before you even start, you feel like you are already behind.
But you are not behind.
You were just never taught in a way that made sense.
That is why so many people stay in research mode. They watch videos, save posts, read articles, and say, “I’m going to look into it.”
But looking is not the same as building.
At some point, you have to move from information to execution.
The First Question: Is Your Business Actually Ready?
Before you start chasing contracts, you need to ask yourself one honest question:
Is my business positioned to be taken seriously?
That does not mean perfect.
It means you have some basic pieces in place.
You need:
- A clear service
- A business name
- A professional email
- A business bank account
- A simple pricing idea
- A way to explain what you do
- Some proof that you can deliver
- A mindset that can follow instructions
This is where many beginners skip steps.
They want to search for opportunities before they know what they are selling.
But clarity comes first.
Module 2 includes a Contract-Ready Reality Check so you can score yourself and see what needs to be fixed first.
SAM.gov: Do Not Let the System Scare You
SAM.gov is the official federal system used for entity registration and federal contract opportunities. Businesses can register their entity, get a Unique Entity ID, and search contract opportunities. (SAM.gov)
But let’s keep this simple:
SAM.gov is not something to fear.
It is a system.
And systems become easier when you prepare first.
Before you register, gather:
- Legal business name
- Business address
- EIN or tax ID
- Banking information
- NAICS codes
- Ownership details
- Contact information
The goal is not to rush.
The goal is to be accurate.
Inside GovCon Glow Up, I give you a SAM Setup Prep Sheet so you know what to gather before you start.)

Certifications Can Help, But They Are Not Magic
Certifications can help your business qualify for certain opportunities.
Some common ones include:
- Women-Owned Small Business
- 8(a) Business Development Program
- HUBZone
- Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business
But please hear me:
A certification does not replace a clear offer.
It does not build your business for you.
It does not guarantee contracts.
It does not fix confusion.
Certifications support a business that already has structure.
SBA confirms that programs like WOSB help women-owned small businesses compete for federal contracts, but you still need to understand eligibility and positioning. (SBA)
Module 4 helps you decide which certification may fit you and whether now is the right time to apply.
How to Find Real Government Contract Opportunities
Most people search wrong.
They type in random words.
They scroll.
They get overwhelmed.
Then they quit.
The better way is to search with intention.
Use your:
- Service type
- NAICS code
- Set-aside filters
- Agency patterns
- Past award research
SAM.gov lists different notice types, including pre-solicitations, solicitations, award notices, and sole-source notices. That means you can study what is active now and what has already been purchased. (SAM.gov)
That is powerful.
Because when you study past awards, you stop asking, “Do they buy this?”
You start seeing proof.
Module 5 includes an Opportunity Research Tracker so you can stop screenshotting random posts and start tracking real patterns.)

Your Offer: What Are You Actually Selling?
This is where everything gets real.
You cannot move forward if your offer is unclear.
You need to be able to say:
“I provide ______ services.”
Examples:
- I provide office cleaning services.
- I provide administrative support services.
- I provide delivery coordination services.
- I provide training and workshop support.
- I provide digital marketing support.
Simple is not weak.
Simple is clear.
And clear gets paid faster than confused.
Module 6 walks you through the First GovCon Offer Builder so you can choose one starter lane instead of trying to offer everything.
The Capability Statement: Your Business on One Page
A capability statement is a one-page document that explains:
- Who you are
- What you do
- What makes you different
- Your business details
- Your contact information
It is not a flyer.
It is not a long story.
It is not a résumé.
It is your business snapshot.
You may use it when reaching out to agencies, prime contractors, or potential partners.
Module 7 gives you a simple Capability Statement Starter Kit so you can create your first version without overthinking design.)
Subcontracting May Be the Easier Door In
You do not always have to start by winning a full contract directly from the government.
You can start as a subcontractor.
A prime contractor works directly with the government and is responsible for the full contract. A subcontractor supports the prime contractor by helping complete part of the work. (SBA)
This can be a smart beginner path because it helps you:
- Gain experience
- Build relationships
- Learn how contracts work
- Support real projects
- Reduce pressure
SBA’s SUBNet was created to help large prime contractors find small subcontractors, though SBA notes that new subcontracting postings are not currently available there. (SBA)
That means relationship-building matters.
You can still research companies that have won contracts and reach out directly.
Module 9 gives you subcontractor outreach scripts you can use even if you do not have federal experience yet.

Mistakes That Keep Beginners Stuck
Here is what slows people down:
1. Bidding before they are positioned
They chase opportunities before their service is clear.
2. Registering everywhere with no strategy
More accounts do not mean more progress.
3. Not knowing their NAICS codes
If you do not know your lane, your search becomes random.
4. Chasing every opportunity
Not every contract is yours.
5. Waiting until they know everything
You do not need to know everything. You need to take the next right step.
6. Thinking certification alone brings contracts
Certification can help, but clarity and delivery still matter.
Module 12 breaks down the beginner mistakes so you can avoid wasting time, energy, and money.
Faith, Discipline, and Capacity Matter Too
This is the part most business advice skips.
You are not just building a business.
You may be building while raising children.
Building while healing.
Building while tired.
Building while praying for God to make a way.
So your system cannot be built on panic.
It has to be built on structure.
Faith is not avoidance.
Faith is aligned action.
You do not need to do everything today.
You need to ask:
“What is the next obedient step?”
Then take it.
Module 10 helps you build with faith, discipline, and capacity so you do not burn out trying to change your life.)
