Top 3 Reasons Moms Are Scared to Start Homeschooling and How to Overcome Them

Starting homeschooling can be scary, but you can overcome common fears! Learn how to boost your confidence, ensure socialization, and balance homeschooling with daily responsibilities. Discover tips, resources, and support to make your homeschooling journey successful. Homeschooling is possible and rewarding!

When we started our homeschooling journey, there wasn’t any room to reconsider because my mind was made up.

The times that I could have second-guessed were only when someone mentioned being opposed to the idea.

A small thought would creep into my mind, like “Aunjahné, c’mon can you really do this?”

But immediately, I would murder those thoughts… cause, I mean, why couldn’t I?

And I would never find out we could do this, unless we tried!

So, I understand that homeschooling can be a huge step for you!

You might worry if you’ll be able to teach well, if your kids will have friends, or if you can handle everything.

Don’t worry! Let’s talk about these fears and how you can overcome them.

1. Feeling Like You Can’t Teach Well

This is a big one for many moms!

Whether or not you were great at one subject and went blank on another, there are a variety of ways to get to a destination.

Here are some:

  • Use Resources: There are lots of books, online courses, free online printables, and videos to help you teach. Websites like Khan Academy offer free lessons in many subjects. You don’t have to know everything. These resources can guide you and your children through homeschooling.
  • Join a Group: Find other homeschool moms to share ideas and support each other. Online forums and local homeschool groups are great places to connect. These groups often share lesson plans, teaching tips, and encouragement.
  • Start Slow: Begin with subjects you feel comfortable with and build up from there. It’s okay to start with one hour a day and gradually increase as you and your children get used to the homeschooling routine.
  • Learn Together: Remember, you don’t have to be an expert. Homeschooling can be a journey of learning together. Show your littles that it’s okay to learn new things and make mistakes along the way (similar to parenting in general)!

2. Worried About Socialization

This one was the one that people dragged when I first decided to homeschool.

Here are some ways this can be solved with a little planning:

  • Join Clubs: Many areas have homeschool clubs and sports teams. These clubs offer regular meetings, field trips, and group activities where your children can meet and play with other kids.
  • Playdates: Arrange playdates with other homeschooling families. These playdates provide a relaxed environment for kids to socialize and make friends.
  • Community Activities: Take part in community events, like library story times, local sports leagues, and classes at community centers. Many libraries and community centers offer activities specifically for homeschoolers. Community activities were one of my favorites to do!
  • Online Socialization: With technology, kids can connect with friends online through virtual study groups and interactive classes. This is another way to ensure they interact with their peers.

Q: Can my kids still join sports teams if they are homeschooled?

A: Yes! Check with your state and school’s authority because there are some schools that will still allow your child to participate in school programs. Also, many communities have sports teams and clubs for homeschoolers. With a simple google search, you will find local homeschool groups or community center programs.

3. Balancing Homeschooling with Other Responsibilities

Being a real mom means wearing multiple hats – a lot of times, at the same.

Adding homeschooling might seem impossible, but you can find ways to balance it all:

  • Create a Schedule: Make a daily schedule to balance teaching, chores, and free time. A structured schedule can help you manage your time effectively. Include blocks for homeschooling, household tasks, and relaxation.
  • Ask for Help: Get your partner or family involved in homeschooling and other tasks. Sharing responsibilities can make homeschooling more manageable. Grandparents, older siblings, and other family members can also contribute to your children’s learning.
  • Take Breaks: It’s okay to take breaks during the day to rest and recharge. Both you and your children need downtime. Use breaks for physical activity, outdoor play, or quiet reading.
  • Flexible Learning: Remember, homeschooling doesn’t have to look like traditional school. You can have flexible learning times and incorporate educational activities into everyday tasks, like cooking or shopping

Q: How do I manage homeschooling with multiple children?

A: Create a schedule that includes group activities and individual study time. Older children can help teach younger ones, and you can rotate subjects to give each child the attention they need.

Conclusion

Starting homeschooling can be scary, but you got this!

By using resources, joining groups, planning social activities, and balancing your schedule, you can overcome these fears.

Remember, you’re not alone, and many other moms, like myself, are currently succeeding and many before us, have successfully homeschooled their kids.

Homeschooling is a journey. Take it one step at a time, and you’ll do great!

With God, and the right strategies and support, you can provide a rich, rewarding learning experience for your family!
